Modern research
Tradition
Romans bathed in lavender — the name traces to lavare, to wash. Medieval English households scattered it across stone floors as a strewing herb to mask damp and discourage moths. Provence built an entire economy on it; Queen Victoria insisted on lavender water in every room.
Modern evidence
Standardized lavender oil capsules (Silexan) match low-dose lorazepam for generalized anxiety in head-to-head trials, without the sedation or dependency profile. Inhaled lavender modestly improves sleep quality and reduces pre-procedure anxiety in clinical settings.
How to brew
Lavender is potent. Use no more than half a teaspoon of buds per cup, steeped covered for four to five minutes. Longer steeps turn soapy. Pairs beautifully with a spoon of honey and a slice of lemon.
Garden note
Wants full sun, gritty alkaline soil, and almost no water once established. Prune hard in early spring but never into old wood. A well-pruned plant lives fifteen years; an un-pruned one splits open in three.
